Song of the Day : Gossip – Are You That Somebody?

The Aaliyah cover is close to the original but Beth Ditto’s voice adds a little something to it. Here’s the live version from Gossip’s Live In Liverpool album :

La Musicale en tournée : Gossip + The Kills + Guests @ Aeronef, Lille, France

March 20, 2008. I’m going to remember that date.

05pm: signing session with Gossip! Meeting Brace, Hannah and Beth was sweet. They are very cool and accessible people.

7:45pm : Pete And The Pirates enter the stage. Their sound is flirting with pop while keeping a rock side. The harmonies kept reminding me of Kings Of Convenience, only with bigger drums. Visit Pete And The Pirates on myspace.

8:30pm : The Blakes and their garage rock set fire to the atmosphere. Brothers Snow and Garnet with drummer Bob played the rock’n'roll attitude card, drinking and smoking, making their sound dirty but still pleasant to hear. Here’s their myspace.

9:20pm : The Kills are in Continue Reading »

Random : Belgian logics

Here’s a photo of some sort of dilemma we (my friend Joul and I) had to face on the way back from Brussels the other night :

Please click the photo to enlarge and see for yourself.

Now if someone can explain the difference between the two signs, please do so. I’m curious. I often complain about the lack of signs in Belgium but this time there’s one too many.

Guess I can never be satisfied.

Tegan And Sara played Brussels, Belgium – 2008 03 18

The irony of my Tegan and Sara story so far is that I can never get to see them play in France. So after Debaser Stockholm, Sweden in 2003 and Stadtgarten Cologne, Germany in 2007 here I was in L’Orangerie du Botanique Brussels, Belgium (the good thing is, the gigs are getting closer to home).

Northern State took the stage as opener at 08pm sharp (I love bands who can handle punctuality). After a shyly (coldly?) received Mic Tester, Spero, Sprout and Hesta conquired the fully packed venue with Better Already. They played for half an hour, punctuating the show with fun discussions and proving they’re not taking themselves to seriously. I really liked Can I Keep This Pen?, their latest album but they are even more impressive live.

9pm : Song Within A Song comes up and the crowd cheers. Tegan and Sara (and the band : Ted, Johnny and Shaun) enter the stage. The first song of the show is Continue Reading »

Video: Kaki King – Pull Me Out Alive

The first single off for Dreaming Of Revenge is the least representative song of Kaki’s sound, but it’s probably the most accessible one for all indie-poppers.

Just so you know :

The video was made without film cameras — it consists of over 5,000 still photographs shot on Nikon D30s. There are no special effects; all of the light trails were created by hand, with up to eight individual “light animators” flashing LEDs and flashlights on and off over a long (8 second) shot exposure. The video was shot in NYC over five very cold, 16 hour days in January. Special thanks to Eddie & Doug at Chop Wood Carry Water, the talented crew, all the actors & extras, Rockwood Music Hall, Jamie Proctor, YouTube and especially all Kaki’s fans who came to NYC from as far away as Virginia.

Funny side note : My friend kris told me this when she first listened to the song : “pull me out alive – how f—ing tegan and sara is that?“. Well, it’s even more than you’d expected, because Sara is in the video (at1:37)!

Song Of The Day : Twin Souls Of Sulfur – Terpsichore

Once again, Allison DeWitt and Forest Christenson release a track that’s close enough to genius to have me play it on repeat for over an hour now (the night is still young, though). It doesn’t quite sound as dark as the lyrics can appear, it’s an interesting feeling.

Here it is for you to enjoy, too :
